PSX Icon Pack v1.00 UPDATED to v1.01

Monday, January 1st, 2007

Tekken 3

Loyal QJ fan
and talented homebrew dev Xaniseth has released PSX Icon Pack v.1.00 for the PSP. This app has all the icons and backgrounds in the proper resolution and saved as .PNG files. When using a program such as Popstation GUI you can simply choose from Xaniseth’s pre-prepared icon sets.

This is not the complete game set for all PSX games but Xaniseth plans to include all in time. The ones you will find here are the more popular titles. If you have a fave icon from a not-so popular game, Xaniseth says he does accommodate requests and will try his best to put it in his next update.

The partial list of icons included in PSX Icon Pack v1.00 are:

  • Final Fantasy (7 and 8)
  • Tony Hawk Pro Skater (1,2 and 3)
  • Tekken (2 and 3)
  • Syphon Filter
  • Metal Gear Solid Integral
  • Chrono Cross

UPDATE: Here’s the next update to the PSX Icon pack; it’s been upgraded to version 1.01. Compared to v1.00 this has far more icon and background sets - over 60 compared to v1.00’s 24! You just need to unzip this folder into the folder where your favorite PSX ISO converter resides and enjoy.

Xaniseth’s also got plans for this icon pack; he says that he plans to add all the Sony SLUS codes and hopefully a front end combining a Popstation GUI type program with a drop down menu system. Stuff to look out for, eh?

Thanks Xaniseth! This is a great way to start 2007!

A look at PSP’s classic collection

Monday, January 1st, 2007

We came across this article over at gaming site Destructoid about five different reasons why we should own a PSP. We found it rather funny, not because of the given explanations, but because we’re pretty sure there are a helluva other reasons than five. We’re sure you’d agree, and we’re sure you would all have your own different reasons, too.

GnGAnyway, there were actually two points there that caught our attention. First point is about Capcom. We gave it a thought and we found ourselves nodding and actually mumbling, yeah. Before we proceed, take a look first at this ultra-electro magnetic lineup:

We know what you’re thinking. “For Christ’s sake, those are all ports.” Yes, we know. Capcom knows. Heck, everybody knows. When you you really think about it, Capcom never went out there and tried to package these as new games. They are bloody remakes and God, they are good ones. Remakes are remakes because of a reason: There’s a demand for these games. Don’t tell us you’ve already outgrown Ryu’s hadouken?

The other point that caught our attention is you, the community, especially the homebrew community. As cliche and as cheesy as it sounds, the homebrew community is one of the best reasons to own a PSP. This includes the user-created games as well as the emulated ones.

In the end, regardless of how others perceive Sony as a company, we’ve got to love that handheld. We got to. We just can’t live without it. ‘Nuff said.

Extreme Link updated to v1.3.1 and more

Quake's latest applications - Image 1Quake's latest applications - Image 2

Whenever the new year comes in, people always talk about resolutions and cleaning up their cluttered lives. The past year always leaves us with a hodge podge of things that need to be organized. As a PSP gamer, we reckon that there’s no better way to start 2007 with a media management homebrew application.

Quake’s Extreme Link v1.3.1 would be a good start.

This release, for those of you who are reading this for the first time, is actually a management application for Windows that allows users to, well, manage their PSP’s media content. From music, to photos and videos even to homebrew game saves and high scores - this application has got you covered. The application is also bundled with USBHostFS and NetHostFS so you can run ISO images from your computer’s hard disk.

Along side this release, is the first version of Extreme Link: Cheat. This file, on the other hand, allows easy management of your CWCheat database. It comes with CWCheat 0.1.6 Rev. E as well so you can use POPS on your PSP units.

We guess that’s about it for now for Quake and his excellent homebrew applications. But as always, as excited as you are, don’t forget to browse through the accompanying readme files. Enjoy!

Zoolook’s Hitless Issue #1: “Ambush”

Monday, January 1st, 2007

Hitless

Can’t get enough of PSP magazines, can ya? Looking to take a break from gaming to just sit back and fiddle around your PSPs? Well, we have great news for you then. Zoolook has just released the first issue of their graphic novel series called Hitless.

Here’s the basic premise and storyline of the novel:

On May 7, 1975, six college students (under the direction of Dr. Grant Parker) were recruited by a covert branch of the CIA to participate in a top secret government project. Their assignment? To assist in the development of an exoskeleton stealth suit equipped with advanced technologies that would arm and protect field agents of the 21st century as they carried out clandestine operations throughout the world. They continue working on the project in secrecy, with the CIA neither confirming nor denying the existence of the project…

Eerie, huh? Assisting in a project that you’re not even sure if it actually exists. And with stunning illustrations (as you can see from the image above), Hitless can definitely give you the “break” that you need and just let you chill with your handhelds. And if you’re really into eerie comics and novels, you also might want to check out Matt Kindt’s Super Spy standalone novels, they’re really good too. So anyway, to get a copy of Hitless “Ambush,” all ya have to do is hit the download link below and you’re all set. Enjoy!

Hot rides on your PSP: Road and Track January 2007 issue

Monday, January 1st, 2007

Road and Track

This post is for all the guys out there who like to live fast: fast games, fast rides, and fast death. Nah, I’m just kidding ’bout the last one but anyway, what we’re really here for today is to bring you the latest issue of Road & Track, a magazine which you can view on your PSPs and tackles everything you need to know about the upcoming hottest rides of the big two-oh-oh-seven.

I’m no expert on cars, but when I browsed through the mag and saw the cars featured in this issue, I must say they definitely are drool-worthy. But sadly, they’re also oh-so-expensive, so I guess for hardcore car fanatics, having them hot rides on your PSP could be enough for that much needed autorgasm. Included in this month’s issue are in-depth profiles of the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 and the very hawt Toyota FT-HS.

The Comparison Test portion of the mag also pits the TT Quattro and Cayman against each other to see which one’s faster, and more deserving of your attention. That said, we bring you guys the January 2007 issue, which you can get right now by clicking on the link below.

Why manly men oughta own pink portables

Monday, January 1st, 2007

Are you not inpired by my physique! The introduction of the Pink PSP and Pink DS units were a mixed bag. On one side, we’ve got those who thought they were adorable, and those on the other who thought they were just unmanly. But seriously, doesn’t it say that “Real men ain’t afraid to wear pink”?

With that thought in mind, we challenge the self-assured testosterone junkies to sit down and read: Why it’s macho to carry a pink portable console.

Abundance
Classic colors like the the PSP’s black or the DS’ white casing are scarce. And if you do ever find a store that sells them, chances are they’ve jacked up the prices to make the most of the market demand. Now, try asking for a pink unit, and see just how much surplus some of these stores have. There’s plenty to go around, and it handles exactly like the others.

Anti-theft device
Picture this: You’re a big, hairy brute who’s standing at the subway, pink console in hand. Out of the corner of your eye, you spot a dude who looks like a mugger. He notices your girlishly pink PSP, then looks at your bulk…and you pop a perky smile back when he looks you in the face. He backs off. See? Deception is often the best defence in nature, and giving muggers the wrong idea is the best way to scare them off - lest they snatch the unit from you. The Pink DS gets plus points for looking like a powder compact.

Pink DSPink DS

Attention-grabber:

Pimpin’ out units is a way of grabbing people’s attention. The problem is that not everybody has the time or skill to make mods. But go ahead - walk around with your chiseled ‘bod, a pink portable strapped to your hand for all the world to see. People will definitely stop and take notice of this unique contradiction of images. We said you’d grab attention, we just didn’t say how.

Easy-to-find
As one blogger put it, the prob with eye-appeal skins is their detectability. We’ve got enough problems finding misplaced units, now why would we want to torture ourselves? Black is the favored paint job of groups like Delta Force, and KonamiStyle’s camou skin is just screaming to be lost in your lawn grass. Save yourself the migraine my main man, and get yourself a bright, cheery easy-to-spot-in-the-dark pink unit. We could recommend light-up mods, but that’s a drain on your batteries.

It’s hackable
Some guys might argue that the Pink PSPs running on disagreeable TA-086 motherboard. This could be problematic for the homebrew scene, especially given that each motherboard update makes it even more challenging to hack. The good news is, we might be closer than you think. Somebody’s already hacked the TA-082 motherboard, and given that bit of good news, it’s only a matter of time before the Pink PSP joins the ranks as a fully workable homebrew platform.

> On a last note, don’t take this as some sort of sexist rant - we’re just reminding you guys that manliness is more than looks. It’s a sense of identity that carries over no matter what we wear or use, and should promote a strong sense of security on who we are. Do not take this piece too seriously…you’ve been warned.

Looking forward: PSP forecasts for 2007

Monday, January 1st, 2007

Forecasts for the PSPA new year will always bring a fresh start for a lot of us. And even though the PSP has been out since March 2005 (December 2004 in Japan), there’s still some new stuff to look forward to this year. We’ve seen a couple of thrills and spills throughout 2006, so what’s there left for the handheld this 2007?

Pocket Gamer flushed out a list of 10 things which people could expect from their trusty handheld this year. Of course, before anything else, we have to say that this is just a forecast based on previous events and are listed upon the Pocket Gamer’s opinions and analysis. It’s their own take on how events would unfold for the PSP.

One of the interesting things they pointed out is the possibility of the “new PSP.” Sony’s prospect of releasing a PSP 2 has already been rumored about for some considerable time now including recent whispers about a redesigned PSP to be revealed this year.

Sprawling as these rumors are, they just are rumors (and have even been heavily debunked by some). But whether these new babies would decide to show themselves or not, people can still hope for a successor to the handheld. It could be the fabled PSP 2, or maybe something else entirely.

More forecasting behind the “Read” link. Click below to check out Pocket Gamer’s take on price cuts, Gran Turismo Mobile, hardware peripherals, and the lack of Nintendogs

Power PRX 3.0

Monday, January 1st, 2007

PSPThe Unique Warrior has once again updated Power PRX, bumping it up to version 3.0. This time, he’s decided to give in to a few requests and added a new config file for button combinations as well as a new brightness mode.

In version 2.0, support was added for users with 1.50 custom firmware. To install this PRX on a PSP running on 1.50 custom firmware, look for the config file (usually in ms0:/psp/system/) and edit a line to the following:

loadmodule1 = “ms0:/seplugins/rebooter.prx”

If you’re running 2.71 SE, all you have to do is run Coldbird’s Universal Module Flasher and install the module (NOTE: This only works in XMB and will be stopped during Gaming). Alternatively, you can simply copy the files in se_plugins in the MS_ROOT/SEPLUGINS to ms0:/seplugins then activate the PRX from recovery mode.

The Unique Warrior has added security to protect against memory stick corruption and bricking, but don’t take unnecessary risks that could end up in brickage. Be sure to read the readme file thoroughly before installing Power PRX.

Atract3, PMf, PMP AVC players PSP VNC for 3.02 OEB

Monday, January 1st, 2007

PSP VNC

New year isn’t complete without all the fireworks and flashing lights - bells, whistles, trumpets, confetti, and Times Square parties. And even though he’s still “in retirement,” Ahman is welcoming the new year with his own kind of fireworks: homebrew ports of his apps to work on 3.02 kernel. So, what’s in his big banging package? His biggest homebrew projects are all lined up for 3.02 OE-B glory. The ports in the package are:

These players will allow you to open media files on your PSP when running Dark_AleX’s 3.02 OE-B. The PMf and Atract3 players allow you to access the said file formats, while the PMP Mod is a plugin that allows you to watch full resolution videos on your PSP. Aside from the players, the PSP VNC is a remote access app that allows you to control stuff on your PC.

Right now though, we can’t seem to access the PMP AVC Mod download link which suloku posted on our forums. We’ve been getting a 404 on that one. We’ll post the other downloads below, and as for the PMP Mod, just keep tabs on this space. We’ll update the post as soon as we’ve gotten access to the archive file. For now, you can head to our forums below and maybe try out for yourself if suloku’s link works for you.
