Sony attributes losses to PSP and PS3

PSP and PS3 - Image 1

It was only the other day when Sony released their Q3 Financial Report. To tell you the truth, it was weird that the report was mostly comprised of shipment details for the PS3 and the PSP, and the topic of the company’s real financial status was skillfully avoided. Online site VNUNet was able to talk to Sony and its statements, remarkably, speak of the sad truth:

This deterioration was primarily the result of the loss arising from the sale of the PS3 at strategic price points, as well as other charges associated with preparation for the launch of the PS3 platform. In addition, operating income from the PS2 and PSP businesses fell due to sales declines.

It is in this light, and probably out of genuine concern, that marketing firm Nomura Securities issued these statements and suggestions:

How and when the company intends to address the problem of weak demand for PS3 hardware remains unclear. In our view, making the PS3 profitable will not be an easy task. We think that a critical stage is approaching for the PSP, which in our view occupies an ambiguous market position as a game console and a multi-purpose audiovisual machine.

Nomura added they believe that Sony losses might exceed their earlier prediction of US 1.65 billion and it can go as high as US 2.05 billion. On the other hand, Sony seems oblivious to the matter as they’re feeling quite comfortable with these dealings:

PrometeusPro 0.10.1 demo

PrometeusPro interface - Image 1

First, the good news. Dago WATT has just released the demo version of PrometeusPro 0.10.1, his latest installment for the PrometeusPro series of homebrew apps for the Mac. For first-time visitors asking what it does, the Prometeus app allows Mac owners the capability to play PSOne games on their PSP, as well as Compress ISOs.

As for the bad news: Dago WATT has also has announced that he will be cancelling the development of Prometeus, as the homebrew had no CD-rip function. If anything, version 0.10.1 now has CDDA support, which should alleviate the former’s absence. See the changelog:

  • CDDA support (0.10.1)
  • .PBP can be opened from Finder (0.10.0)
  • .PMF and .AT3 support (PSX ->PSP / PBP 0.10.0)

As always, we advise the guys to view the bundle’s README, and make sure to donate 1 Euro/USD if you want to get the full version of this app. Given what this has done for the Mac users among us, we figured that’s a small price to pay for its features. Enjoy the demo, and make sure to check out some of the video-related brews that are making their way to Mac users.

Sunday night driving in a scooter and PSP

Thursday, February 1st, 2007

We know the new PSP 3.10 Firmware has been decrypted, but knowing that Sony is right there, breathing down the homebrew scene’s neck, is exasperating. With that said, can we take a few steps back and try to relax even for just one bit? After all, we know that the scene will eventually pwn Sony anyway.

We found this rather cool PSP “mod” over at YouTube and we thought it would be good to share it with you guys. Some dude that goes by the name Priamos2 attached the handheld into his scooter and hooked it up to an onboard stereo system. While this is not as nifty as the PSP GPS, it is still worth looking at. We can only imagine how he goes around his city with this, looking like the smart alec that he is.

Have you ever thought of doing this before? We just hope our scooter guy doesn’t play games while driving as that could prove to be fatal.

CWCheat 0.1.6 REV. H for 3.03OE/ALL

Thursday, February 1st, 2007

Here's CWCheat - Image 1Weltall’s got a new version of CWCheat up for people to try out, and boy, is it a doozy. In addition to the usual bug fixes, he’s got a bunch of new features CWCheat fans will definitely like…

Perhaps the one feature that’ll delight many users here is the inclusion of his recently released PSXMC2PSP application, which allows you to basically move your saved game files across the PS1 onto the PS2 and PSP.

That being said, he’s added support for it, so you should have a pretty easy process for using the two apps, since he made PSXMC2PSP and CWCheat 0.1.6 REV. H for 3.03OE/ALL.

In any event, he’s got a pretty extensive set of readme instructions in English and Italian for the different apps, and it’s always a pleasure to see him taking the time out to help newcomers and veterans with their questions about his app. Before anything else, make sure you check the readme files so you don’t accidentally mess with your PSP’s settings. While you’re at it, maybe you can see if Pasky’s set of CWCheat tools will work with this latest version, eh?

Changes:

  • Added support for memory cards in the pops emulator if the new converter is used (with the homebrew DATA.PSP and no KEYS.BIN) either for the 303 and 302 EMU [POPS]
  • It’s now possible to remove a code from the select cheats menu: press R TRIANGLE [ALL]
  • It’s now possible to add a new code from the select cheats menu: press R SQUARE [ALL]
  • Added PSXMC2PSP [PACKAGE]
  • Other things and bugfixes [ALL]

Thursday, February 1st, 2007

TOCA 3 - Image 1

We have here some screenshots of CodemastersTOCA Race Driver 3 Challenge. Aside from screens, we have been informed that the game will be roaring off exclusively for the PSP on February 16 in the United Kingdom. As for U.S. gamers who are interested in getting this game, well we guess you’d have to import it to join in all the fun.

Anyhow, the game will be blessed with new play modes such as Free Race, Time Trial, and a 12 player multiplayer actions through WLAN. The fun doesn’t stop there as it also features 36 world-famous tracks, each with multiple variations of routes and over 40 of the world’s most exciting real competition cars, both modern and historic and each with their own handling characteristics.

Aside from those, there are also varied skill tests that will challenge the player’s racing prowess. There is the “Bring it Home” challenge where players take control of a damaged car in a race that only has a few laps until the finish. The “No Damage” challenge, on the other hand, will put you in the racetracks with mad drivers, the objective is to finish the race with as little damage as possible. Steering control, Drive the Line, and Duel are the other challenges that players could dabble on.

Ubisoft - Image 1It seems like Ubisoft is aiming to start the year with a bang as they release an updated list of their Q1 games. Blazing Angels: Secret Missions (still stamped with the tentative release in Spring) and Driver: Parallel Lines are just two of the highly anticipated games to be released.

Here’s the list:

Well, there you have it folks. It looks like we all have reasons to celebrate as Ubisoft spreads the love. PS3 gets GRAW 2, Double Agent, and Enchanted Arms while Wii gets a Driver. We’ll just have to sit back and wait for these titles to grace the shelves.

FullScreen Browser v1.1

Thursday, February 1st, 2007

Screenshot - Image 1

From the looks of it, you guys have been enjoying TheNamelessFullScreen Browser for the PSP. For those reading up on this app for the first time, FullScreen Browser is an application that re-sizes your PSP’s browser window to normal resolution. That equals better readability, and one less trip to the optometrist. Simple, but very effective - just the way a lot of us like it. This works on FW 2.0 to 3.10, including 3.03 OE.

Now that we’ve introduced you to this, TheNameless announces the release of version 1.1, which includes some notable tweaks, as said in the changelog:

  • Added custom size
  • Added design support ( sample Design)
  • Add selectable menu bar: None, Small, Normal
  • Added a FAQ
  • Fixes Bug: Configuration was cleared after closing the Browser
  • Small bug fixes

The FAQ mentioned should be in the bundle along with the README - we strongly recommend reading through both bits of text. Kudos to TheNameless for this update. We’ll be awaiting what he cooks up next.

Custom Firmware Extender 1.2

Thursday, February 1st, 2007

PSP - Image 1Cpasjuste has today updated his Custom Firmware Extender for Dark_Alex’s OE-A/B/C custom firmwares, and incorporates a few on Cpasjuste’s own plugins for the firmware to be extended beyond the capabilities of Dark_Alex’s custom firmwares.

Features of this plugin pack include being able to start and stop a ftpd server while under the VSH (PSP Menu) to transfer files via WIFI, reset the PSP with a button while under the XMB or in-game, power off the PSP with a button while under the VSH (PSP Menu) or in-game, and the ability to configure your button mapping. Here’s what’s been added in v1.2:

  • Prevent a crash when booting with UMD inserted.
  • Prevent a crash while using the reboot function (the module is now loaded a few seconds after the psp as booted).
  • Sleep mode disabled when the ftpd is ON (big file transfer ok now).
  • The combo button can now be assigned in the cfe_cfg.txt file.
  • Each function can be now enable or disable in cfe_cfg.txt.
  • A password can be set in the cfe_cfg.txt file to secure the ftpd server connection.

These changes have been made with Cpasjuste’s excellent coding skills so everything should run smoothly, though there may be a few new bugs added in the wake of the changes. If you find any bugs please report them in the forum release thread. This application does write to your flash memory so as always be careful and read the readme!

Infogrames pins sales dip on recent company restructuring

Thursday, February 1st, 2007

Infogrames may start needing a crutch soon... - Image 1After a massive sales drop, things aren’t looking too peachy over at the Infogrames offices. This is because the company has just announced a 24 drop in sales during the nine-month period which spans from April 2006 to December 2006.

Many find it ironic that Atari’s parent company has suffered such losses during this period, since this was also the time when other companies were profiting from the activity generated by the release of the Wii and the PS3.

Infogrames, however, has revealed that compared to sales during the same months in 2005 which generated 193 million (about US 380.1 million), sales this year only went up to 147 million (about US 289.5 million). On top of this, the company also has to deal with the large debts it has incurred over the last few years, most of which were the results of various acquisitions.

As the company prepares to announce the third quarter results on February 8, Infogrames released a statement which blames a recent restructuring as the main reason for the not-so-satisfactory performance during the cited period:

The reduction in revenues seen in the first nine months, and particularly in the third quarter, stems mainly from a significant drop in activity in the group’s American operations, following a restructuring plan of which the priority is to return the group to operating breakeven.

In the meantime, we’re hoping that the company who has brought us games the likes of Alone in the Dark, Unreal Tournament and Civilization would be able to recuperate from their losses soon.
