Die Critters Die v0.5 - a moddable game of roadkill

Sunday, April 1st, 2007

Die Critters, Die! - Image 1 Die Critters, Die! - Image 2

Think of Die Critters Die v0.5 as a moddable game of PSP roadkill. Run over critters to gain points, avoid cones to minimize damage, and keep running over the poor defenseless bunnies. Simple right?

Well, that’s one way to look at it. the_darkside_986 notes that you can also easily add your own gameplay wrinkles by modifying the game’s configuration text to add graphics, increase the spawn count of objects, and basically make your game more like a steamroller running over defenseless kittens and ponies rather than a car running over defenseless deer and bunnies.

the_darkside_986 assures us the future releases will also include audio. In the meantime, feel free to try the game out and let the developer know what you think of his app on the forums.

Sony Japan rereleases Monster Hunter Portable for fans

Sunday, April 1st, 2007

PSP Best version - Image 1If you’re a fan of the Monster Hunter Portable series who only got into the game because of the sequel, then you’re in luck because Sony’s introducing PSP Best rerelease of the original Monster Hunter Portable video game by Capcom. Well, you would be in luck, if you happened to live in Japan.

According to their website, Sony will be releasing a PSP Best version of the original PSP game this coming April 26. There’s no word on whether or not there will be any extra features in this video game, but you have to love the rock bottom pricing they have on this one. You’ll be able to purchase a reissued copy of the game for around 1980 (US 17).

In any case, you’re a lucky son of a bargain hunter if this little bargain alert fits your needs quite well. As for us English-speaking folk, we’ll just have to sign a petition to see a reissue of our own.

Kutaragi “uncommunicative”, blamed for Sony’s troubles

Sunday, April 1st, 2007

Ken Kutaragi and the Sony PSP - Image 1Remember that Wall Street Journal report that labelled Ken Kutaragi as Sony’s “stumbling block”? Newsweek has also come out with a similar piece on the embattled godfather of the Sony PlayStation.

Kutaragi has recently been transferred to the role of Chairman at Sony Computer Entertainment, making him more involved in game development. Kaz Hirai now acts in the role of president. According to Play.tm, the Newsweek report alleges that “the former SCE president was shuffled because of a lack of communication with Sony CEO Sir Howard Stringer.”

The lack of communication reportedly led to the string of problems alluded to in the Wall Street Journal article. Stringer was also reportedly unhappy about Kutaragi’s advice to cut the PS3’s price in Japan, something which, according to Play.tm, “the Sony boss believes could have been a subsequently poor decision.”

Stringer allegedly attempted to fix the lack of communication between him and Kutaragi, telling Newsweek that “I’ve had dinner with [Kutaragi] more times than I’ve had dinner with my wife, and that’s not really healthy.”

Dreaded Kid Beta

Dreaded kid versus foppish girl - Image 1

The dreaded kid is here, and he’s out to make the women cry and the men feel bad about themselves. DreaDNoughT and kid101skater worked together to create the beginnings of a homebrew RPG on the PSP, called Dreaded Kid, and you get to play the titular child everyone fears.

As the two of them mentioned in a tip to us (Thanks!), it’s their:

idea of a beginning to a really fun homebrew RPG game i thought of doing like 3 levels before i would release it and i also thought that if i don’t make it to the beginning of April i would release it as it is.

features: a really cool menu system that remembers your options, 5 slot save game support, ability to turn on and off sound, and music and intro, and some playability.

The game itself isn’t very long as of yet, but they are promising some additional features once they start working on it. For now, why don’t you give it a try and see what happens. They’ve left two different versions to try out, one for custom firmwares, and another for 1.5 firmwares. For now, we’ve combined the two to make it easier for us to upload, but feel free to use whichever one in our combination package suits your needs. Enjoy!

Dark_AleX now working on PSP 3.30 O-E??

Sunday, April 1st, 2007

WARNING: Too good to be true report coming right up. Now, as much as we ourselves are almost jumping for joy, we also can’t help but remain a tiny, little bit skeptical about it all. After all, it’s April Fool’s and we all know that the internet gets flooded with jokes, gags and hoaxes at this time of the year. Anyway, we may all want to just take this with a grain of salt for now, until DAX himself lets everyone know that he is indeed working his magic again on FW 3.03, or until 3.03 O-E actually shows up. However, we ARE crossing our fingers… on with the report!

PSP icon - Image 1When we string together Dark_Alex, 3.30, and O-Es, we can only only imagine the smiles this will be putting on the reader’s faces as they add these words up. Yup - PSPgen has just reported that DA has supposedly announced that 3.30 OE is coming soon.

It will be noted that this news comes in shortly after Team C D’s release of a firmware decrypter for v3.30. DA is reportedly using their decrypter to get working on on this new release, although he’s only begun. The good news is that DA has commented it won’t take too long to complete the work - expect a new custom firmware to be up and about soon.

There are no other details at the moment, except that this new firmware is expected to be larger than 3.10 - so have the proper amount of space ready, and hope for the best. Stay posted in case we pick up further details on this breaking news

Thanks to whoelse for the heads up!

PSPSSH: SSH2 Client for PSP v1.0.3

Sunday, April 1st, 2007

PSP SSH - Image 1Over at the QJ.Net Forums, homebrew coder Zx-81 has announced that PSPSSH is now at version 1.0.3. As freyyr890 explained in version 1.0.2, this homebrew application is “a protocol for remotely using the command line on a system, primarily Linux systems.”

This allows your PSP to issue command lines to your Linux, Unix, or Windows systems (provided they’re running on an SSH server) so long as you have an internet connection.

PSPSSH is Zx-81’s PSP port of the Dropbear SSH2 Server and Client by Matt Johnston, with PSPSSH specifically a port of client version 0.48.1. Moving on to version 1.0.3’s changelog:

  • New Danzeff keyboard layout (alt keys are now available)
  • New option to save the vt100 screen as a text file.
  • New login menu (more friendly, and with new options)
  • Improve vt100 emulation (for example, the nano editor works fine now)
  • As Matt Johnston advised me, I’ve added a new initial random seed generation, using keystroke latency (you have now to press psp keys randomly, the first time you run PSPSSH).
  • Bug fix in random number generator
  • Bug fix in key send function
  • Bug fix in vt100 emulator

Full installation instructions, usage details, and changelog lists are available in the download pack. Also, the maker of this application has included a rather comprehensive readme, so do make sure to go over those notes first. Should you have any complaints, comments or praises for this brew, just head over to the the release thread via the link below, and join the discussions. Lastly, Zx-81 has also provided for PSPSSH v1.0.3’s source code, for the sake of the curious souls wondering how this app works from within.

PSP LUA Software Studio

Sunday, April 1st, 2007

PSP Lua Software Studio - Image 1After engaging in some friendly competition with Re_AnimAte, which was about who would create the better PSP Game Maker, PSP homebrew developer -Maniac- is back with another creation - the PSP Lua Software Studio. Its features include:

  • Syntax highlighting
  • Multi file support
  • Debug WITHOUT command prompt (debugger built in, no command prompt needed )
  • Auto compile with eboot.pbp and make a zip out of it
  • Quick scratch notepad
  • Visual designer (for placing images and text)
  • Pre-made script support (if you use some specific script often, save it as a text document in the Scripts directory and it you can use it by just dragging and dropping next time)
  • Much more, just give it a try

He also noted that the script used in the screenshot to your right isn’t created by him, but it is merely an example of a LUA file. So if the author of the script would like -Maniac- to remove it from the screenshot, just tell him and also inform us through the comments section. No readme file is included in the download, but before using this, please extract files before running the program.

Capcom PAL releases

Sunday, April 1st, 2007

Capcom - Image 1April 12 is a few winks away and hopefully, Capcom and Christian Svensson will fulfill their promise of a game-related announcement. For now, we would have to make do with other Capcom announcements. Checking out German gaming site, Gamefront, we managed to find a PAL schedule of Capcom game releases. Here are the titles that our European friends could expect.

So there. For now, we’ll have to make do with this tidbit. Here’s to hoping that Capcom will throw us a good chunk of news come the Capcom Gamer’s Day Event happening on April 12.
