Custom Firmware 1.62 IE-C Update 2

Tuesday, May 1st, 2007

Custom Firmware 1.62 IE-C Update 2 - Image 1becus25 has released yet another version of his alternative custom firmware.  Now known as Custom Firmware 1.62 IE-C Update 2, the updates in this one allow for quick access to Devhook and enabling or disabling the network update function.

Here’s becus25’s changelog for this version:

  •  When you press WLAN Up, the PSP load Devhook (like autoboot) to start a emulation of one firmware. (put some version of DeviceHook [eboot.pbp] on pspsystem with the name of devhookforsystem.pbp)
  • Added section “Hacks” on recovery menu
    • From this section you can do this :
      • Enable NETWORK UPDATE
      • Disable NETWORK UPDATE

He notes that this should work on TA-079 units, but not with TA-082 (it can, instead, damage TA-082 units). Also, remember to install this through firmware 1.50. Lastly, this update also carries an uninstaller with it. Unlike previous uninstallers, however, this version will not put an index.dat on the root of the memory stick.

BlackShark's Ace of Space v1 - Image 1

BlackShark has got a snappy homebrew game for us all. Entitled Ace of Space v.1, this 2D shooter was actually supposed to be entry to the give away contest. Unfortunately for him, though, he didn’t make it to the deadline. But nonetheless, why waste something as good as this when you can still share it to everyone, right?

And that’s exactly what BlackShark did, bringing his creation over to our forums. So, this is his first real program in C, but we think it’s looking suave for a first-time. What you have to do in this game is to shoot as many enemies as you can until they die. It’s not that easy though, because they have this reincarnation thing going on, so they just keep respawning and so you just have to keep shooting at them.

As for the controls and other whatnots, we’d leave it to you to go check it out at the readme file. Also, you can join the discussion on our forums by clicking on the Visit link below. Enjoy!

Bargain Alert: PSP Core for US 139, select UMDs for five bucks

Tuesday, May 1st, 2007

Bargain Alert: PSPs for 139 bucks - Image 1

We just love the smell of a good bargain in the morning. This week, it seems Sam Goody stores are going to be a good target for bargain hunters (or people who bricked their PSPs) as their PSPs are getting even cheaper, thanks to mail-in rebates.

According to Gaming Bits, Sam Goody stores are offering a US 30 mail-in rebate for all PSP Core units. With Sony’s recent price cut to PSPs, now costing US 169, the US 30 rebate pegs the new price of Sam Goody PSPs at US 139.99. This is a very competitive price when compared to Nintendo’s DS Lite units, which usually retail for US 129. The said deal is only available till Wednesday however, but there’s a chance that the promo may be extended till next week.

In related news, UMDs will also be getting cheaper at Sam Goody stores, as the report from Gaming Bits also notes that certain UMD selections will be selling for US 4.99.  No word on availability of the said UMDs, much less what those titles are, so you might want to check the store nearest you for word on their prices and what titles are currently available for purchase.

UK charts for this week - God of War II for the PlayStation 2 on top

Tuesday, May 1st, 2007

God of War II for the PS2 takes top spot on UK Charts - Image 1 Three titles debut to the top spots on the All Formats charts for the week ending in April 28. God of War II for the PS2 has been out in North America since March, but it’s release in Europe has pushed all the other contenders aside as Kratos elbowed to number one. MMORPG Lord of the Rings Online: Shadows of Angmar debuts at number two followed by The Elder Scrolls VI: Oblivion for the PlayStation 3.

Everybody else on last week’s chart had to make room, though other titles clawed their way to the top and got spots overthrowing MotorStorm, Medal of Honor: Vanguard, and Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars. Here’s this week’s list:

Diddy Kong Racing DS, the remake of the Nintendo 64 videogame by Rareware, debuts on the charts at number ten. LotRO: Shadows of Angmar is now the second fastest selling online videogame behind… (need we say it?) World of Warcraft. We’ll see if Kratos and God of War II manages to stay on top next week. We’ll keep you posted.

William Oertel speaks on Silent Hill Origins for the PSP

Tuesday, May 1st, 2007

Silent Hill: Origins - Image 1

Silent Hill: Origins producer William Oertel was recently interviewed by Euro Gamer and he’s given some new information about this highly anticipated game for the PSP. He discussed the difficulties of developing the game for a mobile platform and the allegations that the game will be more combat-oriented among other things.

With regards to developing the game for a mobile platform, he made it clear that the they (the developers)  had a hard time balancing the game since “the experience of playing this kind of game doesn’t necessarily fall in line with being ‘bite-sized.’” They have focused on making it a good game given the limitations of the PSP.

On Silent Hill: Origins being more combat-oriented, he felt that the essence of a Silent Hill game is not dictated by the amount of puzzles or action in the game but the overall experience that one gets from playing it. He further clarified this by saying that “there are puzzles, of course, necessary to solve in order to advance. We looked at how combat was handled in previous games, and we take this opportunity to try to improve on it.”

Silent Hill: Origins is slated to be out this year. Oertel has already dropped the bomb and said that the game is very near completion, so we can expect the game to be out pretty soon. One thing’s for sure though, we’re going to start freaking out again every time we hear the sound of static when this game comes out. You can find the entire interview via our read link.
