On why Dissidia is on the PSP

Friday, June 1st, 2007

FF Dissidia - Image 1Japanese gaming magazine Dengeki PlayStation, through PSPHyper, finds out why Final Fantasy Dissidia’s nature is to be an action game. According to the report,  this was because it was thought that a 3D action game using the expertise of the team of Yousuke Shiokawa was “the best way to gather all the characters from the Final Fantasy series.”

Who is Mr. Shiokawa? Square Enix’s Yousuke Shiokawa was the lead programmer for boss battles in Kingdom Hearts II. He is now directing Final Fantasy Dissidia.

Anyhow, it was also revealed that the PlayStation Portable was the chosen one as the platform for the game because of the handheld’s ad-hoc mode.

Nomura noted that if they went for aiming at a large user-base, they would have gone for the PS2 instead of the PSP. However, that route would mean that they would be forced to use split-screen for multiplayer, and they are of the belief that split-screen gaming would significantly diminish the fun factor.

It was also revealed that the game’s battle system will take a lot of inspiration from the Kingdom Hearts franchise, but will introduce some new concepts. As mentioned in one of our previous reports, Shiokawa confirms that FF mainstays like levels, class, equipment, and weapon upgrades will all be in the game. What’s more is that there are some character customization options available as well.

As for the game’s setting, Shiokawa mentioned that the development team is concentrating on making each location as “natural” as possible. There may be plans for destructible environments, but the focus for now is more on making each location true to the original. From the images and scans we’ve seen so far, it was noted that some appear to be from Final Fantasy I and Final Fantasy IX.

As mentioned before, this is a 20th Anniversary title, so even though there isn’t an official date yet, most expect the game to hit retail this year.

Rumor confirmed, sort of: Sony Ericsson to make a PSP Phone

Friday, June 1st, 2007

PSP Phone - Image 1While nothing’s set in stone just yet, Sonic Ericsson could be on to something - namely, a PSP phone, or a Phone PSP, gleaned from the recent patent you see thumbnailed to the right of this article.

We’re really not sure what to call it, as the patent doesn’t even give the actual gadget a name - but any way you slice it, it’s something that can probably take the cellphone gaming world by storm, even turn the tables on Nintendo’s iron grip on the handheld market.

If there’s one thing you could cite that had always been holding cellphone gaming back, it’s the controls. A numerical keypad simply cannot substitute reliably as a keypad, and would only result in cramped fingers and wrists.

However, if you look closely at the blueprints, you’ll see that Sony Ericsson’s pretty much taken care of that - a screen you’ll be able to rotate so there are two sets of buttons on either end of the gadget, emulating the layout of Sony’s handheld.

As for games, Sony doesn’t even need to worry about that. If it IS actually a PSP and a cellphone in one,  all the company has to do is make the phone compatible to standard PSP games, and you’ll have a lineup that’s going to be pretty hard to compete with.

In any case, updates about the PSP phone as we get them, so keep it locked right here for any and all developments!

Official site for Metal Gear 20th Anniversary is online

Metal Gear 20th Anniversary - Image 1

The official site for Konami’s Metal Gear 20th Anniversary is up. Although the flash content takes a bit to load, it’s nice that the site not only gives the prices for the 20th Anniversary titles but it also gives a decent idea on what the packaging for the titles will look like.

It also reveals that the the Metal Gear Solid Collection also has a Special DVD entitled “Metal Gear Saga.” It also reveals that a Metal Gear 20th Anniversary Music Collection will be available at Japanese Retail.

Still no word if the 20th anniversary editions will be released in other regions. The lack of an English language link in the official site isn’t a good omen. A lot of western hardcore MGS fans sinking into depression? Probably. But given that they’re hardcore fans, they’ll probably import… or something like that.

To check out the official Metal Gear 20th Anniversary site, click the “read” link below.

Video game retailers to be educated on ESRB ratings reinforcement

Friday, June 1st, 2007

This is the rating Metal Gear Solid 4 will probably receive. - Image 1A major initiative to reinforce the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) ratings on video games has been launched recently by distributing ready-to-use store signages about ESRB ratings to 10,000 independent and small chain retailers in an effort to further support store policies against selling video games with Mature-rated content.

According to the press release from ESRB (who’s working together with Ingram Entertainment), the distribution was carried out by including the signage materials in the May 28th issue of Ingram’s Entertainment Preview magazine. The said issue will will coincide with the June “Entertainment Ratings & Labeling Awareness Month”, so you can expect more fancy posters to be put up on your local video game shops and rentals. Apparently, the effort to educate parents regarding what games kids can play is not enough, thus the move to concentrate on video game retailers for the meantime. The signages will also serve as a tool to further educate the general public.

It should not be that much of a bad news for the younger Metal Gear Solid fans, though. It’s just a matter of letting someone older buy a copy of Metal Gear Solid 4 for them - or have their parent-slash-guardian with them during the purchase. Well, it seems that the ESRB is really working on letting us know what these ratings mean.

Go! Cam Mod v1

Friday, June 1st, 2007

Go! Cam Mod v1 was created by SparkyPSP - Image 1An editor from Belgian PSP site PSPwereld dropped us an email regarding a homebrew application created by one of its members SparkyPSP. It’s about the accessory Go! Cam, a PSP add-on that hasn’t arrived yet in this part of the globe.

Apparently, the said camera makes a weird and loud sound whenever the an owner takes a picture. The homebrew developer now edited the “camera_plugin.rco” file so that the camera no longer produces that irritating sound.

Don’t ask us why would anyone want a silent camera on their PSP because we’re already thinking of a hundred and one fun ways to fully utilize this…should we get our own Go! Cam.

So if there’s someone among you who has a Go! Cam, or Chotto Shot, or whatever you may want to call it, please refer first to the application’s Readme file for further details and full instructions manual.

Leo Kasper a playable character in Manhunt 2?

Friday, June 1st, 2007

Leo Kasper of Manhunt 2 - Image 1

We informed you the other day that Rockstar Games updated the official website for its upcoming psychotic video game title Manhunt 2 (PSP and Wii). Did you, or did you not visit the page? Those who did might still be trembling from the terrors inflicted by Dixmor Asylum, those who didn’t miss a lot of twisted fun.

At the section for voice recordings, we hear inmate Leo Kasper being interviewed by some Doctor Deborah. It was one of those routine checkups, we guess, but the interview is interspersed with cut scenes and what we believe as in-game footage. Watching the whole traumatic section, we have a strong reason to believe that Kasper is going to be a playable character.

Now Rockstar Games has yet to mention anything about this but some of the murders perpetrated during the in-game footage are done by Kasper himself. Fans of the franchise believe that Kasper is going to play a support role but with these revelations, I personally think he’s going to be a lot useful than that.

I don’t have anything to support these speculations except for the various assets released by Rockstar Games. So we’re bringing you back to the official site for Manhunt 2 via our Read link below. This time, we will direct you to Leo Kasper’s section. If you can, go through the whole interactive section and help us figure this one out.
