Official ISO loader found in FW 3.50, 3.51

Sunday, July 1st, 2007

PSP - Image 1More news from the PSP homebrew front. Mathieulh has explained on the Devsgen PSP forums that Sony has included an official ISO loader in PSP firmware versions 3.50 and 3.51. The loader is called np9660.prx and will apparently let PSP users load ISO files off their memory sticks.

The first explanation that comes to mind regarding the official ISO loader is that Sony is planning to release downloadable PSP titles either through PSN or a similar service geared exclusively for the PSP. The company has already mentioned earlier this year that a download service for the PSP is in the works.

French PSP news site PSP-Generation also notes that Dark AleX and Mathieulh will be patching the np9660.prx file for use in custom firmware 3.51 OE.

Thanks to whoelse for the tip.

Dark AleX skipping 3.50 OE, working on 3.51 OE instead

Sunday, July 1st, 2007

PSP - Image 1French PSP news site PSP-Generation has posted some pretty big news - both good and bad - concerning the PSP homebrew scene.

The bad news is that according to Mathieulh, Dark AleX will not be releasing custom firmware 3.50 OE, so those who have been waiting for it won’t ever get it. The good news is that Dark AleX will be rolling out custom firmware 3.51 OE instead to keep abreast of Sony’s most current firmware version for the PSP handheld system.

There has been no time frame yet for when 3.51 OE will come out, but rest assured that we’ll be reporting it as soon as it does. Keep checking back here for updates. Thanks to bhattsan for the heads-up on this news piece.

SCEA’s stand on homebrews

Sunday, July 1st, 2007

SCEA's stand on homebrews - Image 1Sony Computer Entertainment of America does not support homebrews. Some may  be thinking that Sony should actually encourage a community supporting their handheld by giving their time and effort to create free software for it, but apparently, it’s not the case.

A member of the 1UP community forums posted this question: “Is Sony trying to prevent users from running freely available homebrews?” Another member, Tamish, took the initiative to send a message to Sony regarding their stand on homebrews and got a reply that most people would expect to get.

Thank you for writing us.

Sony Computer Entertainment America, Inc. (SCEA) does not recommend downloading any unauthorized software (i.e. games, movies, etc.) for your PSP(TM) portable entertainment system from the Internet; these software downloads have not been officially tested nor approved by SCEA and may cause damage to your PSP system.

Any damage caused to your PSP system due to your use of unauthorized software downloads will void your Limited Sony Warranty for the PSP system. The only approved network updates can be found at PlayStation.com.

So there you have it folks, Sony is not recommending that we download any unauthorized software as it may cause damage to our systems. Do you think it would have been better if they tried to foster the homebrew community or are they right in limiting users to software they provide?

Dark AleX skipping 3.50 OE, working on 3.51 OE instead

French PSP news site PSP-Gen has posted some very good and important news concerning the PSP homebrew scene.

Unfortunately, according to Mathieulh, Dark AleX will not be releasing custom firmware 3.50 OE, so those who have been waiting for it won't see it. The good news is that Dark AleX will be developing custom firmware 3.51 OE instead to keep our psp's as current as possible and to fight against Sony's attitude towards the homebrew community.

There has been no time frame yet for when 3.51 OE will come out, but we will let you know as soon as it does. Keep checking back here for updates.
