New Sony mylo to have PSP software integration?

Monday, October 1st, 2007

Sony mylo - Image 1We’ve gotten a few interesting bits of information on the new Sony mylo from sources close to the company. These are all unconfirmed, though, so until we hear anything official, we’re tagging this report as a rumor.

Anyway, the biggest feature that we hear is coming to the second-generation Sony mylo is the possible integration of PSP software. So, will it be able to run PSP games or will it be limited to PSP firmware and applications? Whatever the extent of integration, it seems the PlayStation brand is spreading onto other Sony devices.

Another interesting tidbit is that Sony seems to be angling to get Sprint as a carrier for the new mylo. Of course, if Sony does get Sprint as a carrier, the mylo’s price point could also go up as the original used WiFi networks to reduce connectivity costs. Here are more updates about the new mylo that we got from our sources:
>

  • New E727 Half-mini card negotiation with Novatel (in-progress)
  • Widget development activities (in-progress)
  • SDK development (in-progress)
  • Developer Program and Developer Community Website.
  • RF technical support (in-progress)

Please keep in mind that these are all just rumors for now. We’ll be sure to give you guys more updates as soon as we get them so keep checking back here.

BBFC opens new site to inform parents on video games

Monday, October 1st, 2007

BBFC opens new site to inform parents on video games - Image 1We guess we don’t have to remind you regarding the recent clash between the video game industry and the different rating boards such as the British Board of Film Classification.

As a further response to recent developments, BBFC launched a new website dedicated to informing parents about video games appropriate for their children.

Called Parents BBFC, the said site gives out information about the ratings U, PG, and 12A among others as well as the corresponding content that fall in those categories. It also lists all the video games rated by the BBFC and detailed explanation why the titles received such ratings.

“This is particularly relevant in the area of video games, where not all parents are as technology literate as their children. We have included all games, including ‘18′ rated games, on the site because we know that parents come under a lot of pressure to buy the latest big selling title”, said BBFC Director David Cooke.

Sony’s IPO in Japan looking good: US 2.8 billion raised

Monday, October 1st, 2007

Sony's IPO in Japan looking good: US 2.8 billion raised - Image 1Here’s an update to our report on Sony’s plan to conduct a massive initial public offering (IPO) earlier this month. Pricing began earlier today and true to initial predictions, the said IPO became Japan’s biggest since Aozora Bank Ltd.’s 351 billion Yen offering in November 2006.

The starting offer per share was at around 415,000 Yen. However, due to low demand activity, Sony decided to lower the price to 400,000 Yen each. At the end of the day, a total number of 800,000 Sony Financial Holdings Inc. shares were sold.

All these money (US 2.8 billion), reports added, will be used to further fund Sony projects Bravia TV and the PlayStation consoles. Yasuda Asset Management Co. Japanese Equities Head Masaki Iso said:

The price is acceptable considering it was set when the stock market hadn’t fully recovered from the sub-prime shock. Sony Financial’s stock has potential to rise as the market will recover.

Sony shares gained 1.4 to 5,650 yen at the close on the Tokyo Stock Exchange.

StrmnNrmn confirms future Daedalus on PSP Slim

Daedalus on PSP Slim - Image 1

We kept our eyes on StrmnNrmn’s page for the eventual release of the Daedalus Nintendo 64 emulator’s next version, R13. The homebrew developer did mention that he was expecting R13’s release do be sometime between September 29 and the first weekend of October. But what surfaced in StrmnNrmn’s site wasn’t the actual release but some clarification of what some of us might have been wondering for quite some time now.

Will Daedalus ever run on the PSP Slim & Lite?

>Yes, StrmnNrmn’s heard your many comments and suggestions. But he says that he doesn’t have a PSP Slim yet. Which means that he won’t be able to verify tests directly on the Slim’s firmware. He does say that he’s planning to support 3.xx firmware - and that other people are welcome to compile the Daedalus source for 3.xx. But until he can do so himself, other people’s releases would have to be called unofficial.

StrmnNrmn’s thinking about setting up a donation page for some people who might want to help him out in getting a Slim. And hell, why not?

The next question now is whether Daedalus (if it did make it to the Slim) would take advantage of the Slim’s additional 32MiB RAM. StrmnNrmn explains that it won’t necessarily give faster emulation speeds, but it can benefit in two other areas: texture cache and ROM cache. The important thing though is:

So in summary, yes, I will support the PSP Slim and Lite at some point, but no, it’s unlikely to offer much of an improvement over the PSP-1000s (other than being slimmer and lighter, obviously :)

PSPenguin - Image 1

FaT3oYCG has finally released an alpha build of PSPenguin on the QJ.NET PSP Development forums. The PSPenguin homebrew app is a Lua-coded Linux shell for the Sony PlayStation Portable, similar to the Ultimate Lua Shell. There’s no changelog yet, but the coder did supply a quick bug list for those who wish to give PSPenguin a spin:

  • you need a music file in the music directory - music activated with the hprm
  • you need a picture in the picture directory - .png or .jpg (any size even bigger than 512 x 512)

Here are the controls:

  • analouge - cursor
  • cross - click
  • square - close current window
  • select - usb
  • l r - screenshot

Most of the code used in this app is from wxpsp, FaT3oYCG’s older shell release. As a shell clone, there’s little to no danger of getting your PSP bricked by PSPensguin, but it’s still a good idea to be extremely careful when installing this app. Click on the Visit link below to learn more about PSPenguin and to report any bugs you encounter.

Itagaki: comparison between DS and PSP flawed

Monday, October 1st, 2007

Itagaki Tomonobu - Image 1Being the two current handhelds in the gaming industry, most people cannot help but pit the PSP and DS against each other. Some even go so far as to bash either Sony or Nintendo’s handheld, while praising the other. However, Team Ninja’s Tomonobu Itagaki of Dead or Alive fame is convinced that this kind of thinking is flawed.

He explained that what Sony aimed to do with the PSP is providing “toned-down” console-quality games, on the go. On the other hand, Nintendo attempted to provide an entirely new level of interactivity between the gamer and the game, which makes both handhelds entirely different from each other.

However, Itagaki finds some beef at the current Nintendo DS game line up:

So now that we are in this market where there are a glut of relatively low-budget games that are filling up the marketplace, the market may be ready for a more serious, more refined experience…They may be tired of all the “training” games, and looking for something more substantial. Or maybe not.

Certainly some interesting interview with the vocal Itagaki, who doesn’t hesitate to voice out his thoughts. The full transcript of the interview is coming up, so stay tuned!

fMSX PSP v3.4.1

Monday, October 1st, 2007

fMSX: it's Metal Gear! - Image 1Hot on the heels of an earlier update on the NeoPop PSP homebrew emulator, uberjack has also updated another emulator project: fMSX PSP. The coder has bumped up the MSX emulator to its 3.4.1 version with the following in its changelog:

  • fMSX upgraded to version 3.4
  • Changes include fixes to the Z80 CPU emulation

For those who are unfamiliar with this homebrew, it’s actually a port of the fMSX emulator. Which means, it’ll allow you to play the classic Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake on your PSP (screenshot above)! Before you get carried away though, make sure you take a look at the readme file included. It’s got all the info you need: installation, compiling, controls, the works.
