The politics of in-game advertisements

Gordon Bellamy of the in-game ad firm Double Fusion talks about the subject of in-game advertising in the Independent Game Conference in Austin. He discusses how advertising could benefit not only the company who does the advertising, but also the game itself.

Bellamy goes into the politics of in-game advertising, explaining that companies can work with Microsoft if they want dynamic ads on the Xbox, but it isn’t possible on the PlayStation 3 and the Wii, so “Doritos can’t be multiplatform.” The best platform for in-game ads, he says, is the PC, because it’s the “broadest market,” and that fosters competition.

He explains one of the successes of in-game advertising, citing Ubisoft’s Far Cry. The game advertised products relevant to the area it’s released in, thus making it possible for the game to be freely distributed.

The downside, however, is that the game spread to areas where there weren’t any advertising partners. In effect the game was distributed for free without the support of advertising and the game had to be pulled out.

Bellamy explains that in-game ads will be a big business, recalling that just a few years before, companies were paid to participate. Now they have to pay the game to be able to participate. He explains that the industry may also grow to US 10 billion in four to five years.

He also reveals that Sony and Nintendo also had plans for in-game advertising but he would not reveal more, saying that they’d have to wait for an official announcement. “I think Sony will make an announcement first.”

Some gamers may find in-game advertisements to be nothing more than shameless plugs, but as fellow writer Charles D. said: “if it helps pay the […] bills […] then by all means advertise away.”

Independent Game Conference: Indie games are here to stay

Pirates Versus Ninjas Dodgeball from Gamecock Media Group - Image 1

Independent works will always have a hard time finding its niche in an already established market, and video games are no exception. Steve Escalante talked about the subject during the Texas‘ Independent Game Conference.

Steve Escalante is the Business Development VP of the Gamecock Media Group and has eight years of experience in the industry. In his speech, Escalante talks about how creating a game usually boils down to creativity versus profitability.

Basically, that capitalistic frame of mind is one of the greatest pitfalls of the industry because it hinders the birth of new ideas for games. Escalante however, proposes that “it s not about changing the industry: it s about using the industry s pitfalls.”

Games, he says, don’t need to be big and well-funded to be able to compete with already established titles in the market. In fact, he says that going big may actually be a setup for failure because a game may end up being released prematurely once its funds run out.

He sums up that Indie games - as is the essence of all other independent works - is about the work. Indie games is all about the games and the fun, not about the money:

Independent, original IP is here to stay. The go bigger or go home statement, we really don t agree [on].

The GameCock Media Group is the publisher behind such games as Dementium: The Ward, Fury, Hail to the Chimp, and Pirates Vs. Ninja Dodgeball.

Sony hires new ad agency for PlayStation brand

Saturday, December 1st, 2007

Sony's PlayStation 3 - Image 1

It was reported earlier that Sony Computer Entertainment of America is dropping TBWA as their ad firm and taking their account (their US 150 million account) to the Los Angeles ad agency, Deutsch, Inc.

TBWA has been SCEA’s ad firm for the last 13 years, but all good things must come to an end. Deutsch Inc. is one of the five finalists in the review for the PlayStation account and whose clients include IKEA, Johnson & Johnson, Old Navy and TGI Friday’s.

They’ll have their work cut out for them if they’re planning to come out with an ad campaign in time for the holiday season. It’ll be interesting to see where the new agency will take the PlayStation brand.

After we got wind of XSEED’s recent announcement that they would be publishing Media.Vision’s Wild Arms XF in North America, we were also able to get our hands on a few more screenshots of the Wild Arms XF characters in action.

XSEED’s first Wild Arms XF screenshot shows main protagonist Clarissa standing amidst other character classes in an oddly familiar character class select screen. The second screenie involves Clarissa, her guardian, Fierce, and a swordsman in what appears to be a confrontation. The last screenshot has Clarissa and friends squaring off against a creature on the overworld of Falgaia.

XSEED’s Wild Arms XF is the first game in the Wild arms series for the Sony PSP. It follows the story of Clarissa, an ARM-wielding knight of the kingdom of Elecius, who attempts to take back her kingdom following the death of the reigning monarch under mysterious circumstances.
