PSP Homebrew - Guitarway to Heaven Riffs Final Version

Monday, November 3rd, 2008

Guitarway to Heaven Riffs Final Version - Image 1As promised, we did hear again from the guys at the RRS dev team with their jammin’ PSP homebrew game, Guitarway to Heaven Riffs. And what do you know, it’s now in its final version.

If you’re only just hearing of this app, then you’re just in good time. Guitarway to Heaven Riffs is actually similar to the Guitar Hero series, where you play along to the notes of a song. The more timed you hit those notes, the higher your scores will be. But of course, as with every challenging game, if you keep missing those notes, then you will lose the game.

This final version has now upped the number of songs to a total of 24, a huge leap from its humble beginnings of five songs. Plus, the graphics have improved by a long mile now.

Anyway, we’ll let you enjoy the Final Version of Guitarway to Heaven Riffs now. Just be sure to check out the readme for proper installation instructions and whatnot.

Violent video games make you aggressive

Monday, November 3rd, 2008

Violent games and aggression - Image 1GTA anyone? According to a study conducted in the United States and Japan, violent games make you aggressive. If you’ve been itching to pound your roomies for squeezing the toothpaste the wrong way, the you should probably lay off Gears of War.

The study used three samples of students with varying age ranges: 9-12 years; 12- 15; and 13-18. All groups have mixed genders. It was found that those who played violent video games showed signs of increased aggression while the others remained in control. It was even found that the results of the study were consistent between different cultures.

So if you’re sitting there disagreeing with everything that the study says and swearing you’ll square off to prove who’s right, then you might want to read up it again. Who knows? Maybe skipping those excess hours of blood and gore may actually help your social life.

The full report of the study is published on the November 5, 2008 issue of Pediatrics Journal. You can check it out via the source link below.

Resident Evil Degeneration to be released on UMD, DVD and Blu-ray

Monday, November 3rd, 2008

Resident Evil Degeneration Collector's Edition - Image 1

Persistence is key, so they say. Couple that with a big title and you know you’ve got a hit on your hands. Just when we all thought the UMD format is done for good, Sony has decided to give it another jolt with Resident Evil Degeneration.

Yep, they’ll be bringing the movie to your PSP’s UMD (at least for those in Japan) on December 17, 2008 for a slightly cheaper price at 3,990 yen (US 40). But the Degeneration infection won’t stop there. It’ll also be released on both DVD and Blu-Ray, with the DVD Collector’s Edition going for 4,980 yen (US 51).

Apart from these, you’ll also definitely want to get your hands on this movie’s copy because it’s got two language tracks: Japanese and English. Time to go bilingual, folks.

Also, if you’re a diehard fan and would like to get a little extra special from the home entertainment release of Degeneration, then you might as well go for the Limited Edition Blu-ray boxset.

Along with the movie, you’ll be getting a figurine of a mutated one-eyed monster (Patapons gone bad, anyone?). And you’d want to hurry, too, cos there are only 5,000 pieces made for this. The Blu-ray Limited Edition will be tagged at 12,800 yen (US 120).

If you’re in Japan at that time, or if you’ve got friends in the area, then maybe you’d want to pick up a copy of this movie. To check out more details, head on to Degeneration’s official site below.

Michael Pachter: EA’s indifference is making investors leave

Monday, November 3rd, 2008

EA - Image 1

After EA’s disappointing quarterly report, followed by a drop in video game shares last week, investors are now abandoning the publisher, mainly because EA management has shown indifference in handling their predicament.

Despite having similar problems, Activision has made steps to ensure investors of their company’s strength and growth. EA, on the other hand, has remained aloof on the matter.

Industry analyst Michael Pachter writes,

The reason for the disparity in valuation is simple: investors believe that [Activision] has “good” management, given that the company has consistently beat expectations and raised guidance, while being incredibly investor friendly; in contrast, investors appear to believe that EA has “bad” management, given that the company has consistently missed expectations and lowered guidance, while projecting an appearance of smugness bordering on hostility to investors.

Pachter has pointed out before that EA is very much capable of turning things around. Pachter still maintains that EA remains strong and is on a road to improvement, although, their only shortcoming would be in ignoring investor concerns. This is even complicated further by the fact that investors are no longer showing confidence that EA can indeed turn things around. EA has dropped 18 in shares since Thursday.

EA has yet to make a statement on the matter, but it appears that they have to take action - and fast.

XMB Destroyer - now works with 5.00-M33 and PSP Slim

Monday, November 3rd, 2008

XMB Destroyer - Image 1

Remember lmtlmt and yongobongo’s old XMB Destroyer game? QJ.NET forums member phlippi has done some work on it and made it playable on PSPs running custom firmware 5.00-M33. The app has also been made playable on PSP Slims.

Aside from the firmware update and Slim compatibility, it looks like this release is still pretty much the same as the old XMB Destroyer: you get a bunch of tools to mess up a screenshot of your XMB.

The old XMB Destroyer had a total of 11 weapons. Phlippi says he just fixed it for 5.00-M33 compatibility, so I guess it’s pretty safe to assume that all the weapons are intact. Check it out and reduce your stress a bit.
