Activision expects PS3 to exceed Xbox 360 growth this year, Wii still on top

Wednesday, November 5th, 2008

PS3 vs Xbox 360 - Image 1In a conference call after posting its 3rd quarter earnings, Activision’s CEO, Mike Griffith talks about their expectations for console hardware growth in Europe and North America. The Xbox 360 is expected to grow by an additional 6 to 7 million units by the end of the year, but the PS3  ought to grow by 8 million.

Though both may experience more growth, they still don’t quite compare to the hot-selling Wii, which is expected to grow by another 15 million units. Griffith also mentions that handhelds will grow by as much as 24 million, though he didn’t break it down to PSP and DS individually.

The holidays are coming and things are looking up for the most powerful console in the market. Couple that with a strong holiday lineup, the PS3 can expect a merry Christmas.

Dood: Prinny PSP gets North American release window, official title, box art, more screens

Wednesday, November 5th, 2008

Prinny PSP - Image 1Prinny is indeed headed for North America in his own Disgaea side-scrolling spin-off care of NIS America.

The western release was confirmed last month, but now via press wire, we finally get a release window of when to expect the game: February 2009 - not all that big a gap from Japan’s release this month.

Coupled with the announcement, we also get to formalize the official English title. Previously only dubbed as “Prinny: Is it OK if I’m the Main Character” or some other variant thereof, the game is now to be formally called Prinny: Can I Really Be the Hero?

We also have a more screenshots following the batch we had the other day, not to mention the box art for the North American version of the game.

France vs Pirates: Bill passed to ban pirates from the internet

Wednesday, November 5th, 2008

Pirates - Image 1They be closin’ in, matey!

Bad news for any French person suspected of illegally downloading content off the Internet. The French Senate voted 297 to 15 in support for a controversial anti-piracy initiative. It’s still not a law yet, mind you, as the bill still has to go through the French National Assembly. If it becomes law, and it looks rather likely at this point, it will work like this:

As reported by Edge online on the bill’s contents, if that user is found to have been illegally downloading copyrighted material, they would have one strike counted against them. Three strikes and you’re out. More specifically, your entire household will be out. No more access to the Internet.

A governmental body called The High Authority for the Diffusion of Works and Protection of Internet Rights would be in charge of this whole operation and will have the authority to suspend or ban the French Public on grounds of “suspicious behavior.”

The bill is not exactly a new one. It’s been recycled in and out of the French Parliament several times now and was previously rejected by the EU citing an infringement of civil liberties. That this follows in the wake of the recent American PRO-IP anti-piracy law is probably not a coincidence, if I were to hazard an opinion.

PSP best buy for Christmas says consumer advice group, PS3 lags behind

Wednesday, November 5th, 2008

PSP PlayStation 3 - Image 1Been wondering what system to compliment your entertainment devices for this Christmas? Reevoo has some suggestions.

Reevoo is a consumer advice portal that collects and publishes reviews on various products written by “ordinary people” rather than traditional critics to prevent any kind of expert bias or ulterior motives. Their scope is rather broad, ranging from digicams to washing machines.

They recently released a guide to the current top picks in the videogame industry today. The system that won top marks? The PSP Slim and Lite.

Scoring a 9.5 out of 10, the little Sony handheld was lauded as easy to set up, not too big, has a bright screen and “looks cool.” On the other hand, it was criticized for having few extras out of the box and poor sound quality. Strangely, the PSP Slim & Lite also has the lest number of consumer reviews to its name on the site.

Among the consoles Xbox 360 Elite (9.0/10) led the way thanks in large part to Microsoft’s timely price cuts which made the overall price even more attractive than it was previously.  The PS3 40GB finished last of its class (seventh overall - 8.7/10) again because of its cost versus value.

I’m suspect there are going to be a lot of readers crying foul on Reevoo’s assessment of gaming systems (I have a few objections myself). Before you start writing angry comments may I just point out that given that most everyone is still reeling from the state of the financial market, cost is a very real consideration (yes, even if you factor in the value of the system).

Astro Boy movie rocketing to video game platforms next year

Wednesday, November 5th, 2008

Astro Boy - Image 1Following their announcement to bring Neil Gaiman and Henry Selick’s Coraline movie to video game consoles, D3Publisher has now also confirmed that they’ve bagged the rights to release a video game tie-in for Imagi Studios’ 2009 feature length animation, Astro Boy.

Other than the announcement to the press, no specific details about the game were revealed. No specific platforms were named either. But from what we know of most kid-friendly movie tie-in games, chances are, it’s going for the full spectrum.

Also, there’s a possibility that the movie’s star-studded voice cast might lend their talents for the game too. Namely, that’d include the folllowing:

The Astro Boy movie is scheduled for an October 23, 2009 debut on the silverscreen, and according to D3Publisher’s press release, the game will be released some time near that, in Q4 2009.
